Vague authenticity of "Every Day is Ashura and Every Land is Karbala"

Sayyed Mahdi Moderissi (son of Ayatollah Sayyed Hadi Almodarresi) was asked this question:

Question: The other day I was talking with an 'aalim here and in discussion he pointed out to me that the hadith 'Every day is Ashura, every place is Karbala' has vague authenticity. Please tell me if this hadith is authentic with references.

Answer: According to some scholars the popularly known chant 'Every day is Ashura, every land is Karbala' has no source (authentic or otherwise) in the Shia books of hadith.

In fact, as I have explained in some Moharram speeches, this saying contradicts a number of traditions of Ahlulbayt that explicitly states that 'There is no day like the day of alHusayn' which has been narrated by a number of Imams such as Imam alHasan.

It is, therefore, imperative that we do not associate the saying to Ahlulbayt. We can use it as a chant to reaffirm our loyalty to Imam Husayn, but remember that considering the devastating tragedies that took place on Ashura and in Karbala are incomparable to any other.

Therefore, when you hear someone saying it, ask them for references from the books of hadith as it seems that there is none.[/indent]

Few traditions:

Imam Hasan (a) addressing his brother says:

لا يوم كيومك يا ابا عبدالله

There is no day like your Day, O Aba `Abdillah.

Ref: al-Bahrani, al-Awalim (al-Imam al-Husayn [a]), p. 154

Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a) says in one of his sermons:

وهذه الرزية التي لا مثلها رزية

. .and this is a calamity the like of which there is no calamity.

Ref: Ibid, p. 448

Abdullah b. Fadhl narrates from Imam al-Sadiq (a):

إن يوم قتل الحسين أعظم مصيبة من جميع سائر الأيام

Indeed the day of the martyrdom of al-Husayn (a) is a day of greater calamity than all other days. .

Ref: Ibid, p. 516

Every Day is Ashura and Every Land is Karbala”

Q: I just wanted to know the reference of this “supposed” hadith - “Every Day is Ashura and Every Land is Karbala” attributed to Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (as)?

A: There is no tradition narrated by the ahlulbyte in such content. It is not but a phrase that is publicly known in our time.
